Back in the 1990s I worked for British Rail, mainly as a signalman in the Manchester area. Up in the buildings were the actual signalling school where signalmen (signallers) were trained. Also in the upper station buildings were the AMI's offices (Area Movements Inspector's) & admin etc. Back then as a member of staff you could just have a look & wander around downstairs (which I sometimes did) but sadly never took a camera. I understand that in the 1940 'Manchester Blitz' the Manchester Victoria A.O.C. (Area Operations Control) office was more or less destroyed in the Luftwaffe bombing, so the railway authorities of the time hastily moved the control office quickly underground by utilising the deep level space below the station during the WW2 era. I mainly remember the area beneath the station in the 1990s mainly being used for ad hoc storage of low value items & archive & detritus etc. At one time there was also the fibreglass front from the other end of unit 142059 that was written off at Liverpool Lime Street on the 5th October 1991, apparently I understand that there were some (short lived) plans to use the surviving 'good' undamaged cab end as part of a train driving simulator... that soon died a death & was never used, although I believe that the cab end still exists & is now in a collection somewhere on the Fylde. Victoria was once a much larger station, consisting of 16 platforms (& a siding road so technically making it 17 platforms). The area of what was platforms 1 to 10, (the area that is now mainly used for the Metrolink) is predominately built on the site of a deconsecrated cemetery consisting mainly of cholera victims, when the station was enlarged in the 1890s, the dead were apparently exhumed, moved & reburied in Manchester Southern Cemetery. The dead were moved out so that the trains could move in. Despite the area being supposedly cleared of bodies, human remains were found during redevelopment works in the 1990s & as recently as 2013. I wonder just how many people realise that a large part of the Manchester Victoria station complex is built on the site of a cemetery. There were also test bores sunk in the early 1970s as part of studies to build the 'Pic Vic' link, a scheme that would have seen Manchester Victoria get another two 'deep level' platforms located in tunnels deep beneath the site of Walker's Croft cemetery & in tunnels bored under the River Irk (these would have been Manchester Victoria 'deep level platforms). The 'Pic Vic' scheme was cancelled in 1977, although an empty concrete box void still remains to this day long forgotten about & located somewhere beneath a retail unit in the Arndale Centre that had it been used it would have formed part of an underground 'station box' for a station to serve the Arndale (I think that it was to have been called 'Royal Exchange & Arndale). A testament to a Manchester Underground that never was, had it happened it would have no doubt seen Manchester's heavy rail network being something like Liverpool's "Merseyrail", although the Pic Vic was to have been overhead electrified at 25KV AC, with services being from Bolton (via a reopened link from Bolton to Radcliffe) where it would meet the then existing Bury to Manchester line in a triangular junction format. In the area of Queens Road the Bury line would have left it's present alignment to go underground in a new tunnel beneath tunnelling beneath Cheetham Hill Carriage sidings, the River Irk the city centre & Piccadilly station to emerge somewhere in the Ardwick area where it would then join up with the existing network. The only bits of this scheme to ever really get built were .. The new Bury Interchange station & the 25KV AC electrification of the line as far as Hazel Grove. Had the Pic Vic scheme took place then stage one of the Pic Vic scheme would have probably seen a pattern of services running from Bolton/Bury/Hazel Grove & back etc. Later on I worked on the engineering planning & engineering liaison side of British Rail & was told that back in the 1970s the people involved in the planning & civil engineering of the Pic Vic scheme & in particular the major projects team had to sign the official secrets act due to having to know about the exact location, depths & intricacies of the top secret cold war 'Guardian Underground Telephone Exchange'. The Pic Vic scheme had to be constructed in such a way as to completely avoid & thus not impact upon the guardian network, so people who weren't in the know were somewhat puzzled as to why the Pic Vic tunnels had to be at such a depth & take such an odd circuitous route, the people in the know were sworn to secrecy & couldn't say why. At 11:48 is a signal box train register book (looks like it's from Ashton Moss North signal box) As for the photo at 23:29 the guy in the photo looks like Arnie Furniss (a former Woodhead route/Guide Bridge guard & later train driver).
